Abstract:
Although humanism in its primary definition resorts to the Renaissance culture but its roots should be sought in ancient Greek philosophy. In ancient Greek philosophy humans and Gods shared common lineage and blended together. The affiliation of man and God in myths along with changes in thinking made it easier for the Greek human to take the place of Gods than other cultures. Greek human replace Gods with much more ease than other cultures. The transition, which arose from cultural obligations of the Greek people, with passage of time, deposed Gods of their appealing power and became absolutely dominant in ideologies. Therefore, with humanizing the divine wisdom, the foundation of philosophy was laid and the previous mythical outlook provided premise for creation of early philosophies. This article aims at specifically reflecting the roots of humanism and believe in humanity in the age of the myths and by discussing the ideological foundations of great philosophers such as Thales, Socrates, Plato and Aristotle on mankind and his position, and review of the philosophy of sophism, to recognize and distinguish those ideologies in the times of philosophy. Ultimately, we will see that philosophers after Socrates stressed on the issue of existence and with tendency towards human essence, they founded subjectivism as one of the principles of humanism and mankind became the center of the universe and the main subject of philosophical recognition.
