Semantic Components of the word ” Farah” in Quranic Discourse with Emphasis on Collocational Relationships

Abstract

One of the major disciplines in Quranic research has been uncovering and explaining the accurate meaning of Quranic verses and similar propositions. In fact, without a precise understanding and knowledge of Quranic lexical items, an accurate understanding of Quranic verses seems impracticable. Investigating the collocational relationships of different derivations of a lexical item serve as an appropriate framework for uncovering the dominant meaning of these constructs. Therefore, adopting a descriptive-analytical method, using Quranic verses, tradition and Imamiyeh commentaries, investigating the collocational and lexical relationship between “Farah” and lexical items such as “ Ata”, “Soe”, “Fadl” and “Nasr”, and employing content analysis and register analysis,  the current research has explained the meaning of “ Farah”, its position in Quran, its related concepts, and its semantic dimensions. Research findings revealed that “Farah” adopts two different meanings in the Holy Quran due to the register of verses. Collocated by lexical items such as “Ata” and “Soe”, the word denotes transient desires which are mainly the result of human preference while in collocation with “Fadl” and “Nasr”, it denotes enjoying human’s sublime values in the light of relationship with the creator and leading a targeted and meaningful life which are results of human needs.
