Abstract

NATO, following its extension to East, has intended to extend its area of influence to center Asia and Caucasus. Taking the position of destructed Russia as a superpower, enormous resources of energy, the danger by local powers, facing political Islam, inability of local countries to establish national security, the danger of a new Russian sovereignty in the area and dormant disputes in Caucasus can be counted as important goal for NATO to extend its domain of influence and presence.
NATO’s extension to the area has caused Georgia and Ukraine to call for NATO membership. Despite USA’s endeavors for their membership, Russia has opposed it hard. European Unity, however, has taken a cautious position and brought some considerations in mind. Granted the membership of mentioned countries in NATO, the influence of this organ would extend to the area near to the north of IRI and lead to some threats in cultural, political, economical and military fields. This paper has paid attention to these consequences.
