Undoubtedly, human beings are inherently perfectionists and seek to improve their current state. Various factors guide this desire, as it may either follow its true path—leading to real perfection—or be diverted toward an illusory perfection. This article, with the aim of ideation and using a descriptive-analytical method, examines and elucidates the role of cognitions that direct the desire for perfection, with an emphasis on the thought of Allama Mesbah Yazdi. The results obtained are as follows: 1) Paying attention to these cognitions paves the way for selecting the correct exemplification of perfection, identifying the right path to achieve it, and ultimately reaching the true perfection of human beings. Three categories of cognitions—namely, innate, rational, and revealed cognitions—each play a role in directing the aspiration for perfection in their own way. 2) The innate knowledge of God causes the development of a tendency toward God, humility before Him, and a distancing from worldly desires. Additionally, the innate inspiration of corruption and piety instills in human nature the general understanding of the relationship between actions and the ultimate happiness or misery in the afterlife. 3) The intellect, through its movement between known and unknown, helps the flourishing of the aspiration for perfection and the acceptance of divine revelation. The intellectual knowledge of God, prophethood, infallibility, and the afterlife necessitates the knowledge of the correct path to perfection and its factors. 4) Revealed knowledge, by presenting the exemplification of ultimate perfection and the path to achieve it, through the methods of glad tidings and warning, and by outlining the positive or negative consequences of worldly actions in the afterlife, plays a role in directing human aspiration for perfection.
