Among the various contemporary scholarly theories regarding the domain of religion, the primacy of human happiness can be regarded as the most prominent. This theory, grounded in ontological and anthropological foundations and in the teleology of human creation, conceives the essence of religion as the exposition of the indispensable path to genuine human happiness, and, consequently, delineates the domain of religion in accordance with this essence, namely, the eternal beatitude of humankind. Scholars such as Mohammad-Taqi Mesbah Yazdi, who count among the foremost proponents of this perspective, on the basis of this very conception of the domain of religion, draw a distinction between the descriptive and normative dimensions of the sciences, thereby excluding the explanation of natural phenomena and the relations among them—and, consequently, the descriptive accounts of the natural and human sciences that bear no indispensable impact on genuine human happiness —from the domain of religion. This constriction of the domain of religion in this perspective has engendered challenges and objections among scholars of the philosophy of religion. The present study, aiming to align and compare this theory with the Qur’anic verses and narrations concerning the delineation of the domain of religion, attempts to evaluate this perspective using an intra-religious methodology. Demonstrating the conformity of this perspective with the Qur’anic verses and narrations pertaining to the domain of religion constitutes the principal finding of this study. This study, while explicating and analyzing the foundations of this perspective, has also undertaken a critical evaluation of it. In order to demonstrate the cogency of this perspective, and in view of certain Qur’ānic objections that have been raised, the most significant verses pertaining to the maximalist conception of the domain of religion—together with the rationale behind the presence of non-normative verses in the Qur’ān—have also been subjected to examination and analysis.
With the aim of introducing this theory to the verses and narrations related to the explanation of the realm of religion, this article has tried to evaluate this point of view with the intra-religious method. The proof of the conformity of this view to the verses and traditions related to the realm of religion is considered the most important finding of this research. This finding is a new step in accepting this view and responding to some exclusions towards it.
