The present study examines the internal and external factors contributing to moral growth and perfection in the thought of Farabi and Allameh Tabataba’i. The research adopts a comparative method, aiming to describe the points of convergence and divergence between the two perspectives and, furthermore, to explain the underlying reasons for these differences based on the foundational principles of the two thinkers. The perspectives of both thinkers, in analyzing the factors of moral growth and perfection, can be attributed to an interactive theory, namely the interplay of internal and external factors. Regarding the external-social factors, the identified elements are largely similar, except that those observed in Allameh Tabataba’i’s works are more compatible with the structures of contemporary societies. Regarding the role of society in the moral perfection of individuals, Al-Farabi merely emphasized cooperation and mutual assistance among people, as social beings, as a key to ethical development, whereas Allameh Tabataba’i, going beyond this analysis, recognizes society as an entity whose identity positively or negatively influences individuals’ morality. To the extent that society, as an external factor, can prevail over intrapersonal factors and exert influence upon them. This distinction stems from the differing foundations of the two thinkers, wherein Allameh Tabataba’i’s theory of “social credits,” his contemporary analysis of “societal identity,” and his distinct ontological and psychological principles are analyzed to elucidate the reasons for this divergence in perspectives. Furthermore, the article presents the author’s comparative evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of each theory, and reconstructs a model illustrating the reciprocal influence of internal and external factors on human moral perfection according to Allameh Tabataba’i.
