The theory of "i'tibariyat" (conventional constructs) by Allama Tabatabai (RA) is one of his most significant philosophical innovations. His perspective on i'tibariyat particularly the two constructs of good and evil, has led to the assumption that this theory results in ethical relativism. Consequently, some scholars have sought to address the challenge of relativism posed by this theory. Some responses have distanced themselves from the theory of conventional constructs (i'tibariyat), while others have faced serious criticisms. Reflecting on the anthropological dimension of the theory of conventional constructs and considering Allama Tabatabai's (RA) anthropology—which emerges from a comprehensive outlook beyond the theory of conventional constructs and is rooted in his divine wisdom—it becomes clear that human reality has a single origin and a defined perfection and purpose. Human conventional constructs are only relevant to the worldly realm, which lies midway on the human journey. Given that conventional constructs have real effects, different constructs can be judged based on their role in either advancing (or bringing closer) or hindering (or distancing from) the ultimate purpose of human reality, which is the station of human perfection (the station of Velāyat). This possibility of judgment, enabled by considering the effects of constructs for actualizing the innate potential of human beings, absolves the theory from accusations of various forms of relativism. Moreover, it aligns more coherently with the theory of conventional constructs and avoids the language that is itself based on constructs and normativity.
